Martin

Rock Engineering & Innovation
With over 38 years of experience in hard rock mining and rock engineering, Martin Cawood has contributed to some of the world’s deepest and most demanding underground mining operations. His global experience spans South Africa, Canada, Australia, Peru, Chile, Sweden, Austria, Portugal, Mali, Ghana, and Zambia.

Martin played a key role as Senior Rock Engineer at Mponeng Gold Mine, where he was part of the team that safely deepened the mine to nearly 3,500 meters—the deepest of its kind.

Specializing in ground support design and the implementation of advanced ground support technologies, Martin has successfully introduced innovative systems across a broad range of metalliferous mines worldwide. His deep understanding of rock engineering principles has enabled him to develop solutions that not only enhance worker safety but also improve ground support efficiency and productivity.

A recognized leader in turning concepts into commercial solutions, Martin has led the development and rollout of more than 20 ground support products over the past 25 years. His process—from underground site visits and problem analysis to intellectual property protection and global implementation—is rooted in practical innovation and a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence. Martin maintains a longstanding relationship with the Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG) and remains actively involved in their Ground Support Optimization Project.
